Most of the issues we face are quality of life issues... the people of Gardiner, representing all of Gardiner, must come together and talklistendiscuss the issues and come up with solutions that reflect the community consensus.

Town Government, at its best, should be about balancing the needs of our growing community. This includes preserving land that is crucial to protecting our water resources and rural assets, but also encouraging the right kind of development in the right places. Supporting a thriving business community in the hamlet is just as important as assuring that our farmers can keep their farms profitable and that those who work in our community can afford to live in our community.

I might run for Town Board someday. For now, I'm playing in the improved Majestic Park.

Dear Fellow Democrats,

Since January of 2004, Democrats have held the majority on the Gardiner Town Board. The result has been an unprecedented series of accomplishments for our town. Among them:

1. A renovated Town Hall.

2. Purchase of the Rail Trail with grant money.

3. A Comprehensive Master Plan with new Ridge and Townwide zoning legislation reflecting that plan.

4. Renovation and expansion of the environmentally sound Reed Bed Sewer System.

5. A new Gardiner Town Library.

6. An Open Space Plan which helps preserve our beautiful rural and agricultural environment in partnership with willing property owners.

7. The procurement of a Transportation Enhancement Grant funding the installation of sidewalks, crosswalks, and accessible parking in our hamlet.

8. Other grants that have been sought and awarded include those from the NYS Council for the Arts, the NYS Hudson Valley Greenway, the NYS Hudson River Estuary, and a NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Grant.

In order to preserve these progressive gains, we must continue to elect Democrats to our Town Board. Candidates for Town Board will be nominated at the Democratic caucus on June 23rd.

We need your help! Republicans are more determined than ever to “take back our town” and undo the hard won gains of the last five years. Everything that has been achieved is in jeopardy.

What can you do? Your contribution counts! Whatever your time and financial limitations, there are many ways to help ensure that our town continues to develop and improve in ways that reflect the Democratic values that have driven our progress since January of 2004. We can all volunteer, support fundraising efforts, network, stay informed. Every campaign requires funding. Volunteers are essential to post signs, distribute literature, help with advertising and staff phone banks. And, of course, volunteers are needed to help, in whatever way possible, raise funds.

Please send whatever you can. We face a formidable challenge and a check for any amount will help preserve the initiatives that Democrats have worked so hard to achieve. Every dollar counts!!! Every dollar helps!!! Please use the enclosed envelope and make your check out to the Gardiner Democratic Committee (P.O. Box 25, New Paltz, N.Y. 12561).

Together we can keep Gardiner moving forward by encouraging smart, environmentally sound growth and business development, maintaining fiscal responsibility, supporting local farming, and promoting open, ethical, and inclusive government.

Thank you for your support.

Very truly yours,

Members of the Gardiner Democratic Committee

We look forward to

The Gardiner Democratic Committee is looking forward to a program of greater outreach into the community. We are considering community service, entertainment, and providing information to help people negotiate these difficult times. We are also considering several fund raisers and ways to honor those who have served Gardiner.

Democrats have held important offices in recent years and Gardiner has never looked better. The town has been experiencing immense growth, but we are going forward constructively due in large measure to our elected and appointed officials. The Democratic Committee has been working behind the scenes, but it is now time that we get out there, and there is much to do.

If you want to join us, come to a meeting and see what they are like. We meet on the third Thursday of every month. The next step is to call Leon Steiner at 845-255-3963 and discuss your interest with him. We look forward to working with you, doing good for the community, and giving you access to the workings of our local politics.

Thank you for your attention. I hope you find the website useful.

Leon Steiner, Chair

INFORMATION FOR THESE DIFFICULT TIMES

The numbers of people facing foreclosure on their homes continues to mount. We have a bailout for the banks and car manufacturers but now people facing loss of their homes need a bailout too. If you hold on until the Democrats take control, there may be a bailout for you. For the present, many banks and other mortgage lenders will try to keep you in your home. Foreclosures cost them and they will often adjust rates and other terms to enable you to stay in your home. It is best to approach the lending institution before falling way behind in payments. Ask them to help you work out an arrangement to pay the mortgage.

There is good news on the home heating front. Last year sources of assistance ran out. This year the huge increases in fuel costs have not materialized. Your bills may be lower than last year. For those who are hard pressed, HEAP has recently received a lot more money and is in a position to assist. They will help pay the fuel bill and for weatherizing your home.

HEAP is at 334-5436.

For other sources dial 211. Seniors can call the Office for Aging at 340-3456. The United Way of Ulster County at 331-4199 provides more information as does the American Red Cross at 338-7020.

Too many people are falling on hard times. We should lend a hand to those who need it.

as Gardiner grows over the next 10 years ... its rural qualities must be protected by insuring that the key decisions are made by concerned, knowledgeable residents and members of the Town Board, not by outsiders or others trying to advance their self-interest.
